‘East meets West’

“The purpose of my master’s collection is to develop a contemporary design aesthetic that captures the essence of post colonialism with a nod to the rich culture of my Sri Lankan roots by pairing uniquely hand-crafted bobbin lace combined with digital knitted fabric, deconstructed tailoring to create asymmetric and voluminous silhouettes that crosses influences and connects the past, present, and future. There are two garments common to all ethnic groups in Sri Lanka – the sarong and the sari. This project explores how these key garments in cultural context have altered the nature of identity, as people seek to adapt themselves to new social conditions and possibilities; proceeding from the understanding that self-representation exists between the person and the colonial past.”
