Inspired by Herb Ritt’s photography and Giorgio Armani’s unstructured suits, Joona Rautiainen, an MA graduate of Aalto University, has created a collection of sensual male silhouettes. The work merges traditional sartorial practices and tailoring with a softer and flowy masculinity through a combination of leather and draping. A shadow effect is achieved by placing silk tulle on top of other fabrics, creating a shifting illusion of shadows. Sustainable practices infuse the collection throughout: deadstock, fabric leftovers and old curtains found in second-hand shops in Helsinki are dyed with tea or reactive colours, and the leather pieces are made from Finnish by-product reindeer leather. The sustainable ethos is perpetuated in a collaboration with Aleksi Marjamaa who has turned recycled glass into jewellery.
