As an alternative to industrially produced garments, BA-graduate Mikaela Mårtensson of the Swedish School of Textiles offers locally produced slow fashion made from sustainably sourced fair-trade fabrics. With a focus on the craft of knitting and crochet, the work bears the touch of the hand. Presented as a series of dresses, skirts and tops, the work focuses on diagonal construction with bias knitting around the body, hugging the human figure. Drawing inspiration from renaissance paintings and fashion, shoulder rolls and eyelets integrated into the knit, mimicking ring armours, pay tribute to past styles and dress making practices. By revisiting traditional crafts, the collection brings forth expressive knitwear and crochet and at the same time demonstrates the power of handicraft and slow fashion.
